Group Members

After
the brief about this assignment and trip was given by our lecturer, we were asked to form a group of 4-5 members and have at least 5 themes for our assignment. Later on, I found Song, Moo, Desmond and Suk Sian to form a group. We gathered in the gallery and started to discuss about our themes. Then we started to draw them up and posted on facebook for online tutorial.

Batik was found in India and slowly introduced to Indonesia followed by Malaysia. The most common patterns are leaves and flowers. Malaysian batik often displays plants and flowers to avoid the interpretation of human and animal images because it looks kind of weird. Moreover, Malaysian batik is also famous for its geometrical designs.

Tutorial

Among chinese masks and peacock, Miss Lisa choosed the chinese mask instead of the peacock because it looks more interesting compared to the peacock. We were asked to design our own individual masks based on only 1 template which is the combination of Suk Sian and Song's masks. Later on, we thought of using the 5 chinese elements to design our masks which is water, fire, earth, wind and thunder. We had choosen our own elements based on our personalities, we will further explain about it during the final presentation. After that, we started to design our own individual chinese masks.

Batik Trip

On 29th of November, both of the July and September FID students went for this trip. We depart at around 9.00 a.m. and reached there around 9.30 a.m. The person in-charge explained everything about the making of batik then we started on our assignment. After hours of work, our batik are finally done. We all enjoyed making our own batik and it really satisfy us. Although it was not perfect but it ended up pretty good for our first time. We all struggled about the waxing part but we enjoyed a lot on colouring it. In future, I hope for another chance to go there again and make a perfect one.

Procedure

Placing

We were placing our sketches below the cloth so that we can trace it on the cloth

Tracing

We traced our sketches on the clothes before waxing so that we will not wax wrongly

Waxing

This was the more hardest part throughout the whole precedure, the wax was extremely hot! The hot wax was filled in the pens, then we use the pen to apply wax on our batik.

Colouring

Here comes the fun part! Tons of colours were provided there, you can take any colour you want and paint it on your batik. Mixing colours and forming gradients were really fun.

Song's Thunder Mask (雷)

Suk Sian's Wind Mask (风)

Desmond's Water Mask (水)

My Fire Mask (火)

Moo's Earth Mask (土)

Final Artwork

Presentation

My group and I wanted to create something related to 1Malaysia concept because batik originated from India but was later on introduced to Malays who modified it. Then now, we introduced a chinese elements into the batik. Thus creating the chinese mask design. We also introduce a feng shui concept into it, which is Water, Fire, Earth, Wind, Thunder. Each mask represents their artists.

My fire mask represents my passion and strength as when I have the passion towards something, I am able to unleash my inner strength upon it.

Desmond's water mask represents calm due to his calmness presented in every situation.

Moo's earth mask represents his endurance and stability as he is consistant throughout his work.

Suk Sian designed the wind mask in which represents the gentleness and the raging of the wind. This is because there are times for her to be sweet and nice and there are also times she is raging with wrath.

Song's thunder mask represents his attitude of straight to the point as lightning also represents precision.

However, Song's thuder mask represents the combination of all our masks. This is because there is a mountain(Earth) in which become a volcano when water and fire mixes which causes the lava eruption. When the lava erupts, fumes are also released from the volcano into the atmosphere, forming clouds(Wind) in which produces lightning.
