RESEARCHES
The Expansion of the Square exercise is to study the interaction of positive and negative space.
Both symmetrical and asymmetrical designs can be achieved through the concept of the expanded square.
In order for the exercise to be completed successfully, it must be balance in the design created.
A symmetrical design can be boring, but if the design is working, it will be interesting and will feel balanced on all four sides.
An asymmetrical design by its nature, consist of shapes which are not alike.
The design itself is strong enough to stand up to be observed from all angles.
If the expanded square has succeeded, it should have an interesting shape in what remains of the original square, and also feel well-balanced in terms of the expanded parts outside the square and how they interact with one another.
My theme for this exercise is "Dragon".
Pre-planning is really important because it consumes a lot of time.
After so much rejections by my lecturer, I've finally sketched out the best skectch compared to all my previous ones, thanks to her.
Tons of ideas were tested by moving my paper around the square as I study my design.
Under my lecturer's guidance, both of my designs ended up to be extremely fascinating.

FINAL ARTWORK

Symmetrical
This is the final artwork for my symmetrical design for this assisgment. The dragons were cut out from a 4.5"x4.5" red colour paper and were mount on a A3 size orange mounting board.
Within the square, The dragons are holding each other's hands while kissing after falling in love with each other hence formed a love shape. The dragons outside the box shows their eternal love that will last forever even though they are dead. Their souls will always be together.

Asymmetrical
This is the final artwork for my asymmetrical design for this assignment. The word "龍" means "Dragon". It was cut out from a 4.5"x4.5" red colour paper. Using the pieces cut out from that particular word, I managed to form a legendary dragon breathing fire. The dragon was mount below the word so that it looks like it is flying out from the word.
