Low-key Lighting

For this scene where Apple was going down the stairs, we used low-key lighting because it is one of the visual styles commonly used in film noir and horrow genres. It is an essential element to create a chiaroscuro effect. Low-key lighting uses only one key light, controlled with a fill light or a simple reflector. We took so much time finding such a suitable angle just to shoot this particular scene with ominous shadow effect.

CONTEXTUAL APPROACH

PRODUCTION 1

Low-angle Shoot

For this scene where Apple was throwing away her medicine into the rubbish bin, we used low-angle shoot. It is a shot from a camera angle which positioned low on the vertical axis, anywhere below the eyeline, looking up. We placed the camera inside the rubbish bin to shoot this scene. It took quite a lot of time just to shoot this five seconds scene because Apple was afraid that she might throw on the camera's screen and broke it.

Contributions of Film Noir to Design

These two scenes of the protagonists showed the dark and inhumane side of human nature with cynicism and doomed love, and they emphasized the shadowy, dark and sadistic sides of the human experience. An oppressive atmosphere of anxiety and suspicion that anything can go wrong, realism, and entrapment were stylized characteristics of this film noir. The protagonists in this film noir were driven by their past.

This film noir contributes to design in the context of multimedia design using text, audio, still images, video and interactivity content forms. Everything is recorded and displayed by projecting onto the screen.
